Spectator Sports

Many of the residents of Michigan's Great Southwest enjoy playing the wide variety of sports our region offers, but others would just as soon watch. Our area has numerous opportunities to join the crowds as a spectator of our exciting local sporting events.

Western Amateur Golf Tournament

Point O' Woods Country Club has played host to the Western Amateur Golf Tournament every summer for the past 25 years. The finest amateur golfers in the world put this tournament on their schedules because of the prestige of the tournament, and the challenge of the Point O' Woods course. The tournament features a combination of medal and match play, with top competitors playing a total of 72 holes of stroke play and 72 holes or more of match play during the course of a five-day event. Avid golf fans have watched such notables as Curtis Strange, Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, Tiger Woods, and Phil Mickelson take home championships at the Western Amateur before going on to star on the PGA tour.

Tri-State Sailboat Regatta

Many Benton Harbor area residents spend their Labor Day enjoying the Tri-State Regatta. Hundreds of colorful sailboats fill the harbor for this annual sailing race.

Apple Cider Century Bicycle Ride

Nearly 10,000 bicyclists take to the backroads of Berrien County each September for this event. This tour takes its competitors through 100 miles of Michigan's Great Southwest's most colorful forests and wine country vineyards.

Bud Light Pro Am Beach Volleyball Tournament

This tournament brings athletes from across the nation to Silver Beach in St. Joseph to participate in a two-day event. The teams who place in the top five qualify for the National Championship. This tournament is nationally televised on the cable station PASS.

Other Sporting Opportunities

Sports aficionados will also enjoy our region's close proximity to the University of Notre Dame and Western Michigan University. Local action also includes the South Bend Silverhawks baseball and K-Wings hockey teams. For a little "Big Ten" action, we are just an hour-and-a-half from Michigan State University, and a mere two hours from the University of Michigan.

If you don't mind traveling a little further, national sports are well within reach - our proximity to Chicago and Detroit opens up additional opportunities to take advantage of professional hockey, basketball, and baseball games. A sunny afternoon at Chicago's Wrigley Field, or a fast-paced evening with Detroit's Redwings, or other well-known teams, is not unheard of.

And while we're on the subject of road trips, let's mention Grand Rapids, just an hour-and-a-half away. Is there such a thing as a Midwestern rodeo? Darn tuttin'. The National Bull Riding Championships recently brought its show to Grand Rapids. GR also has a football team, the Grand Rapids Rampage as well as the Griffens Hockey Team.
